The Graduate Employees’ Organization (GEO) seeks a part-time support staff to help with clerical duties.

Job Description: Employee in this position will work under the direction of GEO officers and organizing staff. Ideal candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to the labor movement and social justice. The candidate will be able to quickly learn the organizational programs, policies and procedures. Duties will include data entry of sensitive/ confidential information, establishing/ maintaining office files, routine computer maintenance, coordinating office volunteers, stocking office supplies, sorting mail (paper and email) and forwarding it to appropriate persons within GEO, researching various projects as needed, and miscellaneous tasks as needed including but not limited to cleaning/ organizing office, photocopying for special events, and answering phones/ greeting visitors to the office. Ability to work with people from a variety of different backgrounds is essential to this position. Experience working in non-hierarchical settings and with volunteers a plus.
Requirements: High school graduation or equivalent. BA preferred. Two years of experience performing duties at the comparable responsibility.
1. Knowledge of secretarial and general office practices/ procedures
2. Computer experience. Specifically, experienced and proficient in using database programs, MS Word, Excel, email and preferably web design experience.
3. Ability to copyedit for accuracy in grammar, spelling, etc.
4. Ability to work independently and under diffuse supervision, prioritize tasks, and use judgment to address basic GEO members’ questions and forward others to appropriate persons within the organization.
5. Willingness to learn relevant software and computer systems needed to conduct the job
Hours: Employee will be expected to work an average of 20 hours/ week. Exact schedule is flexible between 9am-5pm. Ideal candidate will be able to spread the hours evenly over the 5 work days.
Pay rate: $11-13 per hour, depending upon experience
Benefits: Comprehensive health insurance is negotiable. The staff member will be represented by the GEO Staff Union and protected under the GEO Staff Contract with the GEO.
Length of employment: December 27, 2004 to December 26, 2006. Flexible start and end dates.
