Graduate employees, spouses and undergrads have formed a caucus to advocate for improved dependent coverage and childcare resources at UIUC. Email geo(at)uigeo.org to find out how to get involved.
For grads who are also parents, here are a few resources which you may find useful…
Caring for Dependents
UIUC Dependent Healthcare Insurance
You can purchase dependent healthcare through the UIUC student insurance office. Given the great cost and limited benefits the child and partner dependent plans need vast improvements. If you are interested in working with other grads to improve dependent coverage contact the GEO at geo(at)uigeo.org or 344-8283.
Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services
IDHFS offers health insurance to all children and their parents if they live in Illinois, including nonresidents. Click on the Illinois All Kids for more information. You can also call the GEO office or the Champaign County Health Care Consumers (352-6533) with questions about health care.
Carle Hospital Community Care
You or your dependent may qualify for assistance with your hospital bill. *Note: Carle Clinic bills are not covered by this program*
Childcare Resource and Referral Service
The CCRS provides a host of services including a list of providers, a backup childcare service, and help for parents whose children have special needs.
DHS Child Care Program
This program provides assistance to low-income families who need help paying for childcare. Their website has a good tool for determining if you are eligible. One thing to note…they will only help cover the costs associated with childcare for the time that you are working. For example, if you are on a 50% appointment, if you are eligible, you can receive assistance paying for 20 hours of childcare per week.
UIUC Child Development Lab
Accepts a limited number of graduate children to its infant, toddler and school programs.
Parkland Child Development Center
More flexible than the UIUC Child Development Lab. Accepts state assistance.
Offers immediate crisis childcare during critical times of parental stress, illness or emergencies.
Check to see if you qualify. Infant and toddler programs available.
Day Camps and After School Programs
Urbana Park District and Champaign Park District
Both cities offer summer and school-year programs for toddlers to high school students.
Champaign Boys and Girls Club
Offers after school and day programs throughout the year.
If you know of any other resources for grads with children, please contact the GEO office (geo AT uigeo.org), and we will add it to this page. Thanks!
