Over 200 GEO Members Picket Swanlund, Demanding Progress in Contract Negotiations, Better Health Care

GEO members picketing, seen from SwanlundLast Wednesday, over 200 graduate employees from across the UIUC campus assembled peacefully in front of Swanlund Administration Building for an informational picket. Their message was for the university was to complete contract negotiations with the GEO without delay and for the contract to include better and less costly health care coverage for employees and their loved ones. The event attracted the attention of other university workers, many of whom registered their support for our goals. In addition, allies from the university faculty as well as progressive movements such as the Champaign County Health Care Consumers spoke to the picketers at an upbeat noontime rally.

Members picketingOther than a brief tornado alarm late in the picket, the event ran smoothly and exceeded expectations, demonstrating that Illinois grads have the numbers and the determination to stage similar actions if the need arises…
