The Graduate Employees’ Organization, AFT Local 6300, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks a full time organizer to assist in membership recruitment, leadership development, and contract enforcement.
Required experience: volunteer or professional organizing experience, excellent verbal communication skills, ability to work with diverse populations.
Preferred characteristics, skills, and experience: knowledge and familiarity with unions and union organizing, familiarity with universities and graduate employee concerns, experience and comfort with database and desktop publishing software, strong time-management skills, initiative, experience handling grievances and arbitration, and commitment to the labor movement. Duration: The position requires a minimum two (2) year commitment with a start date of August 15, 2004.
Compensation: Salary will be $32,000 for the first year with a substantial pay increase in the second year of employment. Comprehensive health care benefits included.
